The
very fact of landscape complicates polemics which would set nature against
artifice and native against cultivar. Landscapes are the antithesis of
theoretics. We cannot walk barefoot in a theory, weed in a theory, swim
in a theory. But you can do all this in an environment which partakes
of the natural elements of a site and situation, its history of place,
the flora of the locale, and above all your memories and desires. As a
landscape designer I work in arguably the most tangible medium of art
and craft, and to be true to this reality I mediate between the extremes
of stark formalism and ultra-naturalism. I want my designs to embrace
your land rather than an academic’s theory. |
