I
believe that each of us bears within a deeply remembered landscape:
the very field of youth and growth, care and exploration, love and yearning,
routine and play. In many senses the landscapes to which we become accustomed
become our compass rose. I still have a sense – myriad senses
– of the hacking trails of my girlhood, of what a coastline means
early on, of the difference between moss and grass. These formative
memories can never be replicated, but they can be evoked. That landscape
design allows us to reminisce on a very deep level is essential to my
practice.
